Buying bath towels in Bangladesh

A bath towel is woven terry: a ground warp holds the cloth, a pile warp forms the loops, usually on both faces, and one weft binds them. Importers abroad buy them in sets with hand towels and bath sheets; in Bangladesh, hotels, hospitals and gift buyers order by size and weight. Local towel exporters say they buy almost all yarn and chemicals at home.

Towel type and size

Finished size after washing, with a tolerance. Trade sizes vary: a bath towel is often about 76 x 152 cm, a bath sheet about 80 x 160 cm.

GSM and piece weight

State both: same-GSM towels of different sizes hold different amounts of cotton. Trade bands usually call 350 to 450 GSM medium and 450 to 550 GSM heavy.

Pile and ground yarn

Pile warp is usually single 16/1 or 20/1 Ne cotton; the ground warp is usually two-ply, such as 20/2 Ne, as it takes more weaving tension.

Picks per loop and pile length

Three-pick and four-pick terry are usual; two-pick loops are unstable. Longer pile adds weight, thickness and absorbency, so state the pile height.

Border and logo

Plain, dobby or jacquard border with width and colour, usually woven at three to six times the pile's weft density, and any logo's size and position.

Humidity and weighing

Dhaka averages about 75 percent humidity, and 82 to 83 percent from June to September. Weigh after conditioning; heavier towels can take longer to dry.

ASTM D5433 towel specification

A performance specification for bath towels, bath sheets and hand towels, adopted by agreement. Cite the 2024 edition; the 2000 edition was withdrawn.

ISO 5077, ISO 6330 and ISO 139

Shrinkage after washing and drying by ISO 6330 procedures, and weight in the ISO 139 standard atmosphere so humidity does not inflate it.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100

Tests textiles against more than 1,000 harmful substances. Ask the issuer which product class covers the towels and check the certificate number.

What moves the price of a bath towel

• Pile and weight: a higher pile-to-ground ratio and GSM put more yarn into every towel.
• Combed yarn loses about 15 percent of fibre weight in combing, so it usually costs more than carded.
• Two-ply pile, and low-twist pile, which needs longer-staple cotton, usually cost more than single ring-spun pile.
• Design: yarn-dyed stripes, jacquard borders and embroidery add yarns and steps over a plain dyed towel.
